Bond beam

A bond beam is a horizontal layer of concrete used to increase wall strength. Bond beams are usually reinforced with steel. The blocks themselves can have a U-shaped hollow space or have two square cutouts in the middle. They sometimes are located at the bottom of walls that span over an opening to make a deep beam.

In this application, there must be a break between bond beams at the control joints in a wall. Concrete Bond Beam Block has a recessed core for placing horizontal reinforcement. Concrete masonry provides a cost effective answer to a variety of essential building needs including structure, fire separation, architectural finish, sound control and low maintenance. They add steel reinforcement to structures that might need more than just traditional CMUs to hold it up sufficiently.

What is the purpose of a bond beam? How does bond beam work? Essentially, a bond beam is a fully grouted horizontal element with one or two reinforcement bars that provides continuity of the masonry wall.

The space provided in the bond beam block is used for placing cement grout and reinforcement. U-shaped space is used for placing horizontal reinforcement while the cuts or spaces in web portion are used for vertical reinforcement. A swimming pool bond beam is the top portion of the gunite, shotcrete, or concrete in which the pool coping sits and waterline tile is placed.

The pools bond beams , when installed properly, ties horizontal steel with the vertical steel which runs down the walls to the floor. Reinforcement is placed in special bond - beam units that have reduced-height cross webs and grouted solid. Learn more about bond beams from a general contractor in this free.

Technically, the bond beam should be thicker than the pool wall and have more re-bar than the rest of the pool, which in turn, should be the strongest portion of the pool. Acquire the BASALITE CONCRETE PRODUCTS in. The top edge of the bond beam where damage could be seen before coping was removed came off in big chunks, attached to coping and sometimes not.

The worst part of the beam was a crumbled mess of ruble and san and the other hollow sounding part came up in chunks. I have attached a picture of the pool with the type of rubble removed. Site cast bond beams were used years ago as the top course in some masonry construction, but it became apparent that a bond beam using the proper shapes was more economical and structurally more effective.

This block is made of high quality concrete to maintain long lasting strength. Our competitor’s bond beam is 8” x 8” with one (1) rebar. The continuous poured concrete with one rebar measures 5” x ½” and is poured inside a cement block. Beneath the pool coping, and behind the tile is what is referred to by pool builders as the bond beam , or just the beam.

The pool bond beam is subject to many forces acting on it, and for this reason it is usually poured to be thicker and stronger than the lower section of the pool wall. A beam of concrete around 200mm thick is typically poured on the ground around the edge of the shell, locking it into place. Something like this: Typical fibreglass pool concrete bond beam locking the shell in place. The bond beam - connecting the walls to the top of the pool shell. Our design is somewhat unusual for a fibreglass pool, in that three sides of the pool are well above ground level.

In many cases, the block units are provided with knock out sections that are removed when the units are used in the bond beam. Typically, it’s about inches wide and reinforced with extra steel rebar, because the top sections of a pool require extra support. Bond pattern has been the most utilized. It is often used where the width of the unit is half the length (i.e.

8” long x 4” wide), allowing ease of use on corners. This is usually accomplished by filling U-shaped masonry units with reinforcement of concrete and steel. The main function is to supply the horizontal structural support above the opening by erecting the walls. The additional strength that reinforced bond beam s provide helps maintain the integrity of the pool walls and extends the life of your pool.

Cantilevered concrete pool decking must be properly installed to isolate concrete deck from the bond beam. The proper construction technique requires the installation of a bond breaker or slip joint on top of the leveled beam prior to pouring the concrete deck. Bond Beam course was a trough type concrete masonry unit containing two Hreinforcing bars placed horizontally, one above the other, in the ‘trough’. The bars fitted into metal cleats, fixed to columns at their ends and were concreted into the trough.
