Kintsugi

The invention of the kintsugi technique and its meaning. The glue traditionally used to bring the pieces together is the urushi lacquer, which is being sourced for thousands of years from the Rhus verniciflua plant. The word means “golden joinery” in Japanese.

The idea was to take a broken dish or bowl and join the pieces back together. The philosophy behind the technique is to recognize the history of the object and to visibly incorporate the repair into the new piece instead of disguising it. As a philosophy, if an object has been damaged then it has more of a history and should therefore be celebrated and highlighte rather than hidden or discarded. The resulting piece thus incorporates the unique cracks into its design, and the gold lines add to the beauty of the piece while strengthening it.

One would imagine that gold is used as the bonding agent in this technique for repairing pottery, but it’s actually lacquer. The fascinating aspect about kintsugi is that it doesn’t attempt to hide the fact that the piece was damaged. The gold is for decorating purposes. I feel like there could be some sort of analogy drawn out of this DIY and applied to life and I’m especially hormational today so I’ll stop while I’m ahead!
