What is vertical grain fir flooring? Where the wood comes from. In truth, Doug-Fir , Pseudotsuga menziesii, isn’t a fir , at all. It’s genus (Pseudotsuga) translates to “false hemlock.


This wood is used in the manufacturing of more products than any other lumber species. This strong, reliable and workable wood is perfect for use in flooring and has been used for many years. The product is Easy to glue and has good nail and screw holding properties.

This means that if you are looking at a piece of vertical grain wood , you’ll be able to see the lumber’s tight growth rings in straight lines running vertically up and down the face of the wood. They are both clear grades but in vertical grain the grain is very straight and runs the length of the board. This is a technique of positioning the log to a certain degree off perpendicular to the saw.

Clear Vertical Grain. The color differences between the two range from yellowish to reddish brown. Douglas - Fir is technically not a true Fir (Abies genus), but is in its own genus: Pseudotsuga. The tree itself grows to be very large, and yields a large amount of usable lumber and veneer for plywood.


It is an incredibly valuable commercial timber, widely used in construction and building purposes.
