Tji span table

TJI joists are lightweight and come in long lengths, which makes them faster and easier to install than traditional framing, and saves you both time and money. The following screen shot comes from the Trus Joist TJI Manual. It shows the standard span tables for TJI ’s. The tables look overwhelming but they are actually pretty simple to use. This Performance Standard provides an easy-to-use table of allowable spans for applications in residential floor construction, allowing designers and builders to select and use I-joists from various member manufacturers using just one set of span tables.

This will sure make a large, nice basement. These tables can also be used to determine deck joist span. This application will specify a list of acceptable JJI-Joists once you enter your support conditions, load case and clear span. True floor joist span calculations can only be made by a structural engineer or contractor. Nordic I-joists provide a first-rate solution for residential, multiresidential, and commercial construction projects.


Compared to conventional lumber, they offer many well-known attributes and benefits, including light weight, ease of installation, a variety of lengths and design options (multiple spans), the possibility of drilling holes through their web, and a larger surface. However, one must consider two design aspects that are not present in typical floor or roof joist applications. First, the top flange of the joists require bracing if there is no direct applied sheathing. Use of this table for horizontal spans should be limited to roof slopes of per foot or less. For greater slopes, convert horizontal span to up-the-slope span using the table on page 14.

An I-Joist is an engineered wood joist, designed to eliminate the problems that occur when using traditional timber joists. The joists are shaped like an “I” and are lightweight, but strong. I-Joists are produced under strict quality control, so that natural imperfections that are found in natural timbers are none-existant. The design manual contains comprehensive span tables for the various sizes, orientations and spans of TJI joists. This includes span tables based on different deflection criteria.


Builders, remodelers and contractors also have access to detailed construction and safety details that need to be followed for safely framed floor systems using the engineered joists. Maximum spans published on the chart above may be limited by standard joist configuration. Span Tables for Joists and Rafters (Figure 5) gives a required compression value of 2psi for a span of feet and bearing length of 1. For multiple- span applications, the end spans shall be or more of the adjacent span. Adhesive shall meet the requirements given in CGBS-71.


The allowable spans in the tables in this design guide indicate the allowable clear spanfor various joist spacings under typical residential uniform floor loads (psf live load and psf dead load) for glue-nailed systems. The table includes spans for common lumber species used for deck framing like southern pine, Douglas fir, hem-fir, redwoo western cedar and other species. The table accounts for wet service conditions and an incised lumber reduction for species commonly incised for pressure treatment penetration. We do not currently carry this item on the website.

Please check with your local store for available options. For new construction, the plan includes an outside foundation wall that is feet x feet (foot foundation wall for basement). They run the entire foot length without any center beam with lolly collumn.
