How to polish truoil

Use a piece of felt moistened with mineral oil (a.k.a. baby oil ). This is basically a very fine abrasive which, in my experience, works better than extra fine steel wool. A Tru-Oil finish is weather resistant (this is the term Birchwood Casey uses, not “proof”), looks terrific, is very tough, and can be easily repaired or renewed. The method of putting on a fair bit of tru oil and sanding while wet is to get the wood dust to mix with the tru oil to fill the pores. If you have already sealed it with a sealer and pore filler there is no point wet sanding. And yes for a body I would build up probably a lot more than thin coats.


There are lots of ways to apply Tru Oil and everyone will find a way that works for them. I go about my Tru Oil finishes a little different. I use a combination of using a lint free patch of cloth to wipe it on when building the film and then spray the last couple coats. Only buy the small bottles because of the short shelf life.


Sand the wood to 2making sure theres no deeper scratches left in that shows later. Wet sand with tru oil and 2until it makes a filler slurry that fills the pores. Don’t rub it in, just let the wood absorb it. Sand with the grain, and let the Tru Oil cure about a week before you polish. I actually used to use tru-oil , but recently switched to tung oil.


The blending result is hit or miss though. I removed Tru-oil from a neck using denatured alcohol. Just soaked a rag in it and scrubbed it off a little at a time. This probably fills the pores faster and more reliably than just coat after coat of tru - oil by itself. Then, sand the Tru-Oiled surface with 4grit sandpaper, using more Tru-Oil as a sort of lubricant, and using circular motions over a small section at a time.
