Blue Sky uses a Wood -Mizer bandsaw mill to create beams, boards and planks of various sizes, depending upon the needs of customers. The majority of what we saw consists of hardwoods. We do saw some eastern white pine, as it becomes available. Besides the usual red and white oak, walnut, cherry, etc. I have a bit of oddities like hackberry, sassafras, honey and black locust , and locally grown softwoods like white pine, eastern red cedar, Norway spruce and ponderosa pine.
This makes getting usable lumber out of a trunk difficult or impossible. It turns a reddish brown when exposed to the air. The wood is often confused with Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera). It has a high density and decay resistance.
It shows slight shrinkage and stays in place well. It is also planted for firewood because it grows rapidly and makes a good slow burning fire. In the days of a changing worl we need allies like black locust. We need trees that can grow without alot of fuss. Black locust can grow under any extreme soil and weather events.
These trees feed pollinators, store carbon, replace pressure treated lumber , and support other hardwood species. A variety of sizes are available and are highly popular among woodworkers. If you would like to see our current lumber prices, please click the All link below.
