The great north wood

It had occasional landownings as large clearings, well-established by the Middle Ages such as the hamlets of Penge and Dulwich. Twenty small fragments or re-plantations remain including Dulwich Wood , Sydenham Hill Wood , Biggin Wood and Beaulieu Heights. States New Hampshire. Topography, the Dulwich Estate, luck and circumstance have led to over woodlands now found within the GNW area (including many which retain elements of an ancient character), together with a wide range of other sites of biodiversity interest. The Northeast Kingdom region of Vermont is very remote and rural. The northern part of the Green Mountain National Forest is in this region. These remnant ancient woods straddled the clay ridge running from Honor Oak to Beulah Hill. Really good local suburban pub, right next to West Norwood train station, serving tasty food in decent portions and offering a good range of craft beers and lagers.

North Maine Woods has raised the minimum age that requires visitors to pay fees from age fifteen to age eighteen for both the North Maine Woods and the KI Jo-Mary Forest. There has been a trend towards fewer young people hunting, fishing, canoeing and camping in the Maine woods , so perhaps this change will have a positive impact on this trend. The area spans from the Down East lakes of Maine to the Adirondack Mountains of New York, generally bordering the Canadian province of Quebec. The map shows the approximate extent of the forest in the 16th century. It was the time of the Tudors and they were building timber-framed houses, of which Staple Inn beside Holborn is a good example. There are real, practical benefits to be had from grouping and re-connecting, several local woods under one umbrella project.

As early as mid-September, the first signs of leaves tinged with color nudge into view along mountain ridges and the waterways that thread through the forested villages.


Famously, this is where the mighty Connecticut River begins its 410-mile journey to the sea from a remote beaver pond just a few hundred yards from Canada. Much of the prehistoric wildwood had been cleared by around 5years ago and by the time of the Norman Conquest, the landscape was largely “ a patchwork of fields, pastures, woods, hedges and scattered farmsteads and hamlets. I grew up hunting small plots of private land and was not yet accustomed to hunting what felt like limitless boundaries.
