Sapele lumber

Works fairly well with hand and machine tools, tends to tear interlocked grain in planing, saws easily, finishes well, good gluing and nailing properties, satisfactory peeling and slicing. Uses: Since sapele belongs to the same botanical family as true mahogany, its uses are very similar. It is also seen occasionally with wavy grain which will lead to a mottle or fiddleback figure. Sapele lumber

A remarkable feature of sapele is that the grain is interlocked and changes direction in frequent, irregular intervals. Before WWI the principal demand for this wood came from Germany where it was used for decorative cabinet work. FroCameroon, Congo, Central African Republic, Ghana. Technically, the two genera that are usually associated with mahogany are Swietenia and Khaya. Golden to light reddish brown. Grain is generally straight with occasional wavy pattern.
