Underlayment grade plywood

Underlayment grade plywood

Should underlayment be glued or just screwed? Do I need underlayment for hardwood floors? A final mark to check is the thickness of the plywood. What is APA grade plywood?

UNDERLAYMENT ( EXTERIOR GRADE ) Exterior Grade Softwood Plywood is most commonly used in the construction industry for its structural qualities and price point. A structural exterior (water resistant) adhesive is used to adhere the veneer layers together. Plywood underlayment is a thin plywood material that is most commonly used under resilient flooring materials, such as vinyl and linoleum sheets and tiles. It can also be used under hardwoo laminate, and carpet, but this is much less common these days because subflooring is typically smooth enough for these materials, many of which are installed with a different type of underlayment or pad. The underlayment grade is superior in both moisture resistance and density.

These panels have been repaired and sanded on both sides. It is very versatile. The face is generally light and even in color, with small pin knots and streaks.

Plywood used as underlayment for sheet vinyl flooring should also have a sande smooth surface on the topside. Avoid using materials with distinct raised grain patterns, which can affect the finish texture of the sheet vinyl. A- grade plywood features a smooth, sanded surface without knots. Any wood defects have been repaired with synthetic filler, so the veneer can be painted.

B- grade plywood also features a smooth, sanded surface, but may have more repaired defects up to 1-inch across. Manufactured from thin sheets of cross-laminated veneer and bonded under heat and pressure with strong adhesives, plywood panels have superior dimensional stability and an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and are highly resistant to impacts, chemicals, and changes in environmental temperature and humidity. The grading system for plywood is an easy puzzle to solve thanks to the simple A–D letter system used to indicate the quality of the panel. Plywood is graded per side, meaning that individual sides can be graded differently. The letters A, B, C and D typically refer to the veneer or face of the material. Individual manufacturers vary on what can and cannot be used under specific products, but generally most recommend an APA (American Plywood Association)-rate underlayment-grade plywoo a minimum of ¼ thick (½ thick if the boards are wider than or not tongue-and-groove).
