Which is the best plywood? What is the best grade of plywood? What are the different grades of plywood? In the United States, there are four basic softwood (construction) plywood veneer grades you need to worry about: A, B, C and D. Occasionally, you may run into a fifth grade called “C-plugged.

Each sheet will have two grades, such as AC. The first letter is the face veneer grade , and the second is for the back veneer. All large knots are replaced with football-shaped patches, which can be sanded and finished with the rest of the panel.


When buying plywood at your local supplier, you may notice that there are a number of different grades. The normal grading system uses the letters A, B, C and where A is the best quality, with virtually no blemishes and very well sanded. Grade D typically contains up to the maximum number of blemishes allowed. There are four main types of plywood veneer grades.

These are known as A, B, C, and D. Within each sheet of plywood , there are two grades present. The grades run from A, which is the highest, to D. This compound is written out as AB, AC, and so on. The reason there are five grades in total is because the C grade has two grades : C grade and C plugged grade. Most plywood is described by more than one grade.


The interior plywood is available in different grades and the common grades are A-C, B- etc. It is used for construction within the house. Plywood grades are (best to worst) A, B, C and D for face or front face. They cannot be exposed to moisture and are bonded with agents that give away when exposed to the elements of nature. The Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association of America ( HPVA ) have created a set of rules called the Voluntary Standard for Hardwood and Decorative Panels commonly known as grading codes, which define allowable.
