Driving the movement of wood is the presence of knots, the taper of grain and the pith. The finest timbers are free of heart center (f.o.h.c.), straight grain and a knot size limitation. That is your best shot at limiting movement while enjoying the properties of wood. Juniper lumber comes from a small tree that has a great deal of character. Juniper landscaping timbers are true dimensions, meaning they are an actual x or which is pefect for stacking.

Landscape grade lumber will often have some bark, wane, knots and is rough sawn. Western Juniper is highly durable and similar to cedar and redwoo offering decades of performance. Juniper oxidizes (turns gray) sooner than you would expect. Celebrate the silvery look or be ready with a good finish when you utilize the wood.

The hardness is one half of oak and the many knots mean the wood wants to move a lot. There is no advantage to quartersawing because the grain and knots are all over the map. The logs I utilize for making juniper lumber are the invasive juniper trees that degrade our grasslands and watersheds.

Expect fifty percent waste. When milling green or dry logs, the defect is rampant. Given that juniper is a naturally durable wood species, one market of particular interest has been sign posts and guard rail posts.

Most species of juniper are flexible and have a high compression strength-to-weight ratio. This has made the wood a traditional choice for the construction of hunting bows among some of the Native American cultures in the Great Basin region. These bow staves are typically backed with sinew to provide tension strength that the wood may lack.
