In the United States, there are four basic softwood (construction) plywood veneer grades you need to worry about: A, B, C and D. Occasionally, you may run into a fifth grade called “C-plugged. HARDWOOD PLYWOOD (IMPORTED) Imported Plywood is graded with a face and back grade designation. Face veneers are considered clear and free of defects with a light-uniform color.


Back allows 3-color matched patches, which are oval in shape and egg sized. Inner cores are solid birch single piece veneers. B Where the natural characteristics and appearance of the species are desirable. C D Provide sound surfaces but allow unlimited color variation. For example, you may notice that a panel is rated A1.


While the letter A represents the face grade , the number represents the back grade. This is the highest back grade possible for hardwood plywood. These are typically sold as A-C plywoo with one side sanded to A grade while the interior side, which will not be seen by the user would be a lesser C grade. Most hardwood plywoods are sanded A-C grades , but some SPF varieties are also sold as one-side sanded.
