Mdo plywood for boat building

I use the stuff all the time and like it. MDO and HDO are special use panels that were created by the plywood manufacturers to do some specific jobs, but have also found acceptance and interest among boatbuilders and in other crafts. Which plywood should I use for building a boat?

Is plywood good for building? Do you need a plywood floor for a fibreglass boat? The MDO is impossible to separate from the plywood and is the reason why highway signs last practically forever.

HDO (high density overlay) on the other hand is not good for boat construction. MDO panel is a paintable surface made of plywood with a weather-resistant resin overlay bonded to the wood by heat and pressure. If you absolutely insist on not sheathing your plywood boat , consider using medium-density overlay ( MDO ) panels. These still require routine coating, but the overlay prevents surface checking and presents a smooth paint-ready surface.

These do cost more and may not be readily available, however. Medium density overlay panel or MDO panel , is a paintable surface made of plywood with a weather-resistant resin overlay bonded to the wood by heat and pressure. MDO is valued for its defect-free composition and highly uniform density that allow it to cut, rout, shape and drill cleanly, holding intricate detail with a minimum of waste and tool wear. Note that even though the plywood has been snapped and left exposed to rain and wind it still holds its integrity.

This was located underneath a faux teak floor meaning that it is most likely the original plywood used to build the floor of the boat. In some ways it would make most sense for the plywood suitable for boat building to be the only plywood with a marine grade label. Alas this is not so.

Water resistance, bending ability, and appearance are all key. MDO board resists water, weather, wear and degradation. Designed to have a smooth, paint-receptive surface. It’s a preferred panel, therefore, for structural siding, exterior color accent panels, sof-fits and other applications where long-lasting paint or coating performance is required. Ideal for exterior and interior applications requiring a very smooth finished look when painted. A smooth resin (water resistant phenolic) impregnated cellulose fiber is bonded to both the face and back that is durable and weather resistant. For example, painted MDO has better rot resistance than painted okoume plywood.

And then, epoxy coate fir marine plywood has the most rot resistance of the three. The panels were joined with Scarfs on the proper boat and the template boat (Miss ACX) wide butt blocks were epoxied to the interior to join the panels. Well, both boats float, one is a beauty, but with Miss ACX plywood , the inner. MDO plywood can be used for more times in shuttering purposes especially in very bad weather, cold. You should always research or run your own tests on a few samples before burning your supplies budget on a bunch of a useless sheet materials.

Our MDO industrial panels are manufactured with a high quality resin impregnated medium density overlay that is thermally bonded to a durable plywood panel. MDO paper can be applied to one side or two sides. This panel is economical, easily painte and has a durable surface. When boat building with plywood always use the best quality you can afford.

For hulls and decks, my advice is to always use marine grade. MDO is produced with a high-quality thermosetting resin-impregnated fiber surface bonded to one or both sides under heat and pressure to create an exterior-grade plywood panel. Specially selected veneer directly beneath the fiber overlay provides a smooth surface that is ideal for painting.
