How to remove sealer from concrete

How to remove sealer from concrete

The mechanical way involves using some kind of tool to physically grin san or blast away the sealer. This method can be noisy and damaging to the concrete. There can be significant scratching or damage sustained during the process of mechanically removing sealer.


Thin layers of concrete sealer , especially water-based products, can be stripped by using a pressure washer. The high-pressure water can break the coating free from the concrete surface and the water will then wash the debris away. Pressure wash the surface and allow concrete to completely dry. The poultice is covered with special paper that protects the paste and keeps it wet.


As it dries, it draws the contaminating particles out of the pores. The acid etching process will remove the old concrete sealer completely from the concrete slab. The high pH of the alkaline causes the break down of the sealer , allowing for easy removal from the surface of the concrete.


In its place will stand a fresh slab of concrete ready for a new application of concrete sealer. Caustic strippers are a good for removing latex , alkyds or enamel paints from concrete. This is why chemical strippers, which do not impact the concrete surface, are the most common method for removing sealers and coatings from stamped concrete surfaces. Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub the area with a scrub brush.


Steps to Remove the Sealant: To use mineral spirits, wipe the spirits over the area with a cloth. To use a concentrated degreaser, follow the instructions on the label of your selected product. Solvent based strippers are the most common types of strippers used when removing concrete sealers. Look for ones that contain the chemical Methylene-chloride.

How to remove sealer from concrete

We use the Clemons Concrete. Some good choices for this are Krud. Cover all the house and all delicate shrubs, vegetation, furniture, etc. Then pour Xylene or a citrus stripper onto the concrete. Apply more Xylene or stripper and scrub the sealer using a stiff straw scrub brush on a broom handle, until the solution re-liquifies.

Then use a paint shield or wide scraper to scrape the sealer into a pile. When acrylic coatings develop frosty appearing surfaces, the first thing many contractors do is scrub a solvent such as xylene (xylol) into the sealer to dissolve the polymer film, drive it deeper into the concrete , and reattach it to the concrete. Scrub the area that has been sprayed with Flex Seal until it fades and disappears.


These two steps have to be repeated as long as you are patient enough in scrubbing the area by using cloth and also.
