Azulejos tiles

Did you scroll all this way to get facts about azulejos tiles ? The most common azulejos tiles material is metal. You guessed it: blue. Azulejo , (from Arabic al - zulayj, “little stone”), Spanish and later principally Portuguese tiles produced from the 14th century onward.


Azulejos tiles

The word azulejo stems from Arabic roots, meaning ‘small polished stone’. Originally they were fairly simple structures cut into geometric shapes in neutral tones. Dating as far back as the 13th century, azulejos tiles have a long history in Iberian culture.


Arabic in origin, azulejos tiles were brought over with the Moorish invasion of Spain. It’s hard to believe that raw yellow lump will take on the intense terracotta colouring of the baked tile , but it’s true. What are azulejos used for?


They are also tempting buys, especially in Lisbon, Sintra, and Algarve. Most visitors to Portugal end up buying a tile as a souvenir, which can be remarkably inexpensive. It has become a typical aspect of Portuguese culture.


In Portugal, azulejos are found on the interior and exterior of churches, palaces, ordinary houses and even train stations or subway stations. Especially, in old buildings. Azulejo is a form of Portuguese and Spanish painted tin-glazed ceramic tilework. They are an ornamental art form, but also had a specific functional capacity like temperature control in homes. Azulejos is also spelled as Azulejo and Azulezoz.


No wonder Portuguese tiles are famous the world over for their beauty and variety. To learn more about the art, we joined a workshop in a Porto art studio and painted our own blue tiles in the traditional Portuguese style. This is my attempt to share pictures of Portuguese azulejos and share all about the tile painting workshop we attended.

Azulejos tiles

There are approximately 20tiles covering the walls of the inside of the train station. The tiles are also located on the outside of the station. Most of the tiles in the train station are scenes from Portuguese history. Dutch blue white tiles , flower tiles , Spanish Talavera ceramic, floral decorative, vintage andalusian azulejos , patterned Victorian tile. Since then we are researching about these tiles , the factories, making processes and painting techniques.


Named azulejos, the tiles have traditionally adorned façades of monasteries and community buildings as well as superbly decorated kitchens and bathrooms. They are very much a part of everyday life in both rural and urban settings. If you were to travel there or experience daily life on the Iberian Peninsula, the ubiquitous presence of classic blue tiles would be ingrained in your memory. She chose to decorate them in tiles – and this began a tradition that would see every future metro station decorated with incredible tile art.
