Aluminum oxide finish

What is an Aluminum Oxide finish ? What will dissolve aluminium oxide? Is aluminum oxide safe? The application of either product has definite benefits, with some disadvantages.

An aluminum oxide finish provides a top layer of scratch resistance to the hardwood. It also guards against oxidization and seals the board’s top surface. It’s almost like an additional shield to the wood.

The finish penetrates the upper layers of the woo which not only enhances the grain, but resists scratching from normal use. Typically, the number of coats of aluminum oxide will range from 5-layers for most flooring products. This makes it very tolerable for skin contact even for people that are chemically sensitive.

When sanding aluminum-oxide finishes, the same concept applies. Rather than start with the most aggressive grit you can find (the large mallet), start with something finer, like an grit (the ice pick). The finer belt will break up the finish , and after that, you can move to the rougher grit to get the floor flat and take it from there. Aluminium oxide is responsible for the resistance of metallic aluminium to weathering.

Metallic aluminium is very reactive with atmospheric oxygen, and a thin passivation layer of aluminium oxide (nm thickness) forms on any exposed aluminium surface in a matter of hundreds of picoseconds. This layer protects the metal from further oxidation. AO is the same material that is used to make sandpaper. It is a very tough and is added to the finish system to extend the durability of the urethane.

After the finish system is applied it is baked on to the hardwood in a specialized UV oven. Take special care not to damage this coating when cleaning the floor. Some common household cleaners can dissolve the coating, making your hardwood floors appear dull and dingy.

The UV coating preserves the floor’s color and sheen so it doesn’t fade quickly from UV radiation. Pour a small amount of aluminum oxide floor cleaner in a bucket. Soak a terrycloth mop in the cleaner and wring out the mop hea removing as much of the cleaner as possible. Rub the mop over the flooring then buff it with the floor buffer.

But , the aluminum oxide layer seals the surface of the board and guards against oxidization as well. This benefit provides a natural hard and durable material to supplement the heartiness of the wood floor you’ve chosen. Try anything else in a case like this and be prepared to pay for a new floor.

The minerals on 80-grit abrasives are much smaller and closer than a rougher grit like 50. They will remove the aluminum oxide finish more efficiently and will leave a minimal scratch pattern in the floor. It comes already installed on the best prefinished hardwood flooring.

Aluminum oxide is the finish you buy when you don’t want to deal with it at all. Although this type offers supreme durability, it’s difficult to refinish. Thanks to patented Aluminum Oxide Nano Technology, this polyurethane outperforms leading brands with maximum resistance to scuffs, scratches and stains. It can be found in applications ranging from anti-slip surfaces, industrial applications as a blasting media, and as a raw material in refractories.
