Our selection is small because we only buy high-end grades. AAA Flat Cut Ebony (Macassar) Veneer Lot 5. While there are many ebonies , Macassar ebony is the best known and most commercially significant. This dramatic, bold wood is nearly black in color with thin, contrasting yellow-brown stripes and a beautiful sheen. Because the tree is small, veneer is rare, precious and highly sought after for cabinetry and architectural millwork.
Due to the unique grain patterns it is difficult to match sheets. The key difference is that Amara ebony has a hint of pink or red in the lighter stripes and so it makes a great companion with other red and salmon colored veneers like cherry. Despite the difference in color, Amara is the same species as Macassar. These dyed veneers are made of reconstituted woods for quality and consistancy and can be used in segmented woodturnings, inlays, marquetry and many other fine woodworking projects.
Peghead Overlay Veneer. Ebony Our Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) comes from West Africa and tends to be more uniformly black than we have seen from other sources. Available in 6- random widths x 24- long. The grain patterns and range of colors in these ebony wood veneer sheets are outstanding. The Janka hardness test is the international standard for measuring the resistance of a sample of wood to denting and wear.
